Crew installing an impact window in a light stucco wall
Impact windows

Impact-rated windows, and the paperwork that proves it.

"Impact-rated" isn't a marketing adjective — it's a specific testing standard tied to a specific product approval number. We'll show you that documentation before we install anything.

White single-hung impact window in a light stucco wall
01Most common replacement

Horizontal roller impact window
02Ranch & mid-century homes

Horizontal roller

One or both sashes slide side to side on a track — a common match for the wide, low openings in many Central Florida ranch-style and 1970s–80s homes, with good ventilation since a full panel opens.

  • Widely available impact-rated
  • Fits wide, low openings
  • A full sash opens for airflow
  • Easier to operate when wide

Casement window cranked open onto palms and garden
03Best seal, needs clearance

Casement

Cranks outward on a hinge like a door. Because the sash compresses against the frame when closed, casements typically seal tighter against wind-driven rain — a real advantage in Florida's rainy season.

  • Available impact-rated
  • Tightest seal against rain
  • Crank-out operation
  • Needs exterior swing clearance

Picture window with impact glass, interior view
04No moving parts

Picture / fixed

Glass only — often the most cost-effective way to get a large, unbroken view over a kitchen sink, beside a front door or in a great room. Usually paired with an operable style nearby.

  • Commonly available impact-rated
  • Large, unbroken views
  • No hardware to maintain
  • No ventilation on its own

Bay window seating nook with arched windows
05Statement window

Bay / bow

A multi-panel projection that extends out from the wall, combining fixed and operable units. Best in a dining nook, primary bedroom or living room where the extra space and curb appeal justify the cost.

  • Available impact-rated
  • Adds space and curb appeal
  • Needs proper support & flashing
  • Costs more than a flat install

What the term means

The approval number is what matters.

It ties the exact glass thickness, interlayer, frame material and anchoring method tested in a lab to what gets installed in your rough opening.

ASTM E1886

Structural performance under thousands of cycles of positive and negative wind pressure.

ASTM E1996

Large-missile impact resistance of the specific glazing and frame assembly.

Florida Product Approval / NOA

The number earned by passing that testing — or a Miami-Dade NOA for the stricter HVHZ standard.

Tested anchoring schedule

Installed per the manufacturer's tested instructions, so the protection matches what was tested.

FAQ

Impact windows, answered plainly.

Cutaway detail of an impact window frame
How much do impact windows cost?

Cost depends on opening size, frame material, glass package and how many windows you're replacing. We give you a written, itemized quote at the free assessment rather than a generic per-window number.

Is impact glass code-required at my address?

It depends on whether your address sits inside the Wind-Borne Debris Region or the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. Most inland Orlando/Orange County addresses fall outside both today — ask us to check yours directly.

What does installation actually involve?

Existing windows come out down to the rough opening, the opening is checked and prepped, and the new impact unit is set, shimmed and fastened per the manufacturer's tested instructions, then sealed and finished. A permit and inspection are part of the process.

How long does a typical window project take?

Timelines depend on order size, manufacturer lead time and permitting turnaround. You'll get a written schedule at the assessment.

What's the warranty?

Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and typically cover glass, frame, hardware and labor separately. You get the specific written warranty documents for your product before you sign anything.
